The United Way of West Central Connecticut will one again by running the Adopt-A-Child Back to School Program for the 2020/21 school year. United Way believes that the first day of school is an important event in a child’s life that is often overlooked. Through generous donations from the community, they have helped bolster a local child’s self-image, which has been found to have a dramatic effect on performance in the classroom and can lead to lasting changes.
However due to the restrictions, closures, and changes implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have had to make several changes to the program this year. They are not able to collect forms from the children and their families and will not be assigning donors with specific children to shop for. Schools and local organizations will provide the total number of children that need backpacks as well as their grades and gender, which in turn will be provided to you.This is the best option to reach out to and sign up the greatest number of families during these trying times.
This year donors are being asked to purchase a backpack and supplies, and instead of clothes, to provide a gift card (if they are able and willing) to a store that can be reached by public transportation (for example: Wall-Mart, Kohls, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls) for the child’s parent or guardian to purchase them clothes for the first day of school.

Once you sign up you will be provided with the gender and grade for each child that you adopt as well as a list of school supplies needed.
Donations will be accepted at the United way office on August 10th and 11th from 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
